A Message from Mick
Every day, we are bombarded with ads and news stories about the next big thing in technology. Right now, in the air conditioning and heating world, that big thing is the cold climate heat pump.
If you’ve seen any videos online about them or read anything from the equipment manufacturers, you might think installing a heat pump is a perfect solution.
It will BOTH magically slash your energy bills to zero AND is good for the planet!
Add in the thousands of dollars in rebates available right now through MassSave and Clean Heat RI, and it’s easy to see why homeowners are eager to jump on the bandwagon.
But as someone who has been installing, servicing, and recommending home comfort systems for over 30 years, I feel a strong responsibility to give you the honest truth. Before you get lured by a massive rebate check, we need to talk about the reality of heat pumps and the associated cost.
Let’s start with what everyone gets right – heat pumps are a fantastic piece of engineering.
By running entirely on electricity and transferring heat rather than creating it through combustion, they drastically reduce a home’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources like heating oil and natural gas.
I’m a big fan of the technology. In fact, Briggs Heating and Air Conditioning is a proud authorized Heat Pump Installer for both MassSave and Clean Heat RI programs. We help our customers install these systems every single week.
BUT, even though heat pumps are incredibly energy efficient, it doesn’t automatically mean your monthly utility bills will drop.
Here in New England, our electricity rates are among the highest in the country. While a heat pump can use less energy due to its efficiency, the cost of the electricity required to run it can sometimes meet or even exceed what you would have spent on gas or oil.
Total energy costs are driven by utility rates, and a better, cleaner technology right now doesn’t equal lower costs.
When I started this company nearly three decades ago, I built it on a simple philosophy, “Quality you can take comfort in.”
To me, quality doesn’t just mean a clean installation. It means giving you the best and most honest advice.
Heat pumps can be an incredible addition to your home. For some houses, a whole-home heat pump conversion is a perfect fit. For others, it’s too expensive to operate compared to traditional systems.
The only way to know what truly works for your unique home and budget is to trust experienced HVAC professionals who look at the whole picture.
Don’t let a big rebate and the promise of savings commit you to the long-term nightmare of your monthly utility bills. Let’s sit down, look at your home together, and design a system that gives you real, lasting comfort.
