Home Electrification
Home electrification is a process that begins with identifying and addressing inefficiencies in the home. This involves improving energy use and replacing outdated systems and appliances with modern, all-electric solutions. By making these upgrades, homeowners can enhance energy efficiency, reduce their carbon footprint, and create a more sustainable living environment.
Step 1: Weatherize
Weatherization, including insulation and air sealing, helps reduce the amount of energy your home uses to stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. This can dramatically improve the comfort of your home and may allow you to buy a smaller, less expensive heating and cooling system.
Step 2: Consider Your Electric Panel
An upgrade to your electric panel may be necessary to prepare your home for electrification and can be included in a 0% interest loan through the Mass Save® HEAT Loan Program. If you haven’t upgraded your home’s electrical panel, consult a qualified electrician.
Step 3: Electrify Your Heating, Cooling, and Major Appliances
Get off fossil fuels and switch to all-electric options for your major home systems like space heating, water heating, and cooking.
Step 4: Electrify Your Small Appliances & Tools
Options for electric lawnmowers, small appliances, and more can help you fully electrify your home.
Step 5: Power with Renewables and Battery Storage
Installing solar panels and a battery storage system or subscribing to a community solar plan means you can power your electrified home with 100% renewable energy.
Heat Pumps:
Heat pumps can efficiently heat in the winter and double as a cooling system in the summer. They’re powered by electricity with no in-home fuel storage or carbon emissions. Get a rebate on heat pumps and the opportunity to apply for 0% financing.
Boilers and Furnaces:
Today’s boilers and furnaces are more efficient than older models and can save you energy and money. Is it time for an upgrade?
Room Air Conditioners:
ENERGY STAR® certified air conditioners now save even more energy and money with better sealing and insulation materials to keep you cool and comfortable. Get a rebate when you purchase an ENERGY STAR® certified room air conditioner.
Integrated Controls:
Integrated controls automatically switch between a heat pump and a fossil fuel heating system at a pre-set outdoor temperature. This maximizes the use of a heat pump for maximized savings and comfort. Get a rebate when you install an integrated control with an existing air source heat pump system.
Smart and Programmable Thermostats:
Smart and programmable thermostats help you save by letting you control your energy usage remotely. Get a rebate on each qualifying smart or programmable thermostat you purchase.
