Beat the July Heatwaves: Steps to Take When Your AC Suddenly Fails

There is a specific kind of dread that sets in when it’s 90°F outside in Southern New England, the humidity is climbing, and you suddenly realize your air conditioning is blowing lukewarm air—or worse, has stopped running entirely.

When a major heatwave hits the North Attleborough or Providence areas, HVAC systems work overtime. Unfortunately, that peak demand is exactly when older or strained components decide to give out.

If your AC just quit on you, don't panic. Before you assume you need a costly system replacement, walk through these four immediate troubleshooting steps. You might just save yourself a service fee.

1. Check the Thermostat (The Easy Fix)

It sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how often a simple settings glitch is the culprit.

  • Is it set to "Cool"? If someone accidentally switched it to "Heat" or "Fan Only," the system won't drop the temperature.
  • Check the batteries: If your thermostat display is blank or fading, replace the batteries immediately. A thermostat with dead batteries cannot signal your AC to turn on.
  • Lower the target: Drop the temperature setting 5 degrees below the current room temperature just to see if it kicks the compressor into gear.

2. Inspect Your Air Filter

When was the last time you changed your HVAC filter? In the peak of summer, a heavily clogged filter restricts airflow so severely that your system’s internal safety switches will shut it down to prevent overheating.

  • What to do: Turn off the system at the thermostat, pull the filter, and look at it. If it’s coated in a thick gray layer of dust and pet hair, replace it.
  • Warning: A clogged filter can also cause your indoor evaporator coils to freeze over. If you see ice on the refrigerant lines, leave the system off to let it thaw before restarting.

3. Look at Your Circuit Breaker

Running at maximum capacity during a New England heatwave draws a lot of electrical power. If your system suddenly went completely silent, it may have tripped a breaker.

  • What to do: Locate your home’s main electrical panel. Look for the switches labeled "AC," "Air Conditioner," or "Air Handler." If a switch is caught in the middle position, flip it all the way to "Off" and then back to "On."
  • Note: If the breaker trips again immediately, do not keep resetting it. This indicates an electrical fault or a failing compressor that requires professional attention.

4. Clear the Outdoor Condenser Unit

Your outdoor unit needs room to breathe to exhaust the heat from your home. If it's choked by summer overgrowth, it can overheat and shut down.

  • What to do: Ensure there are at least two feet of clear space around the outdoor unit. Cut back tall grass, weeds, shrubs, or overhanging branches. Carefully clear away any grass clippings or cottonwood fluff stuck to the metal fins.

What to Do While You Wait for a Technician

If you’ve gone through the steps above and your home is still heating up, it’s time to call in the professionals. While our crews work quickly to respond to summer calls, heatwaves mean high volume. Here is how to keep your home safe and as cool as possible while you wait:

  • Seal out the sun: Close all blinds, curtains, and shades—especially on the south and west-facing windows.
  • Use fans strategically: Ceiling fans don't cool the air, but they create a wind-chill effect on your skin. Make sure they are rotating counterclockwise.
  • Limit indoor heat sources: Avoid using the oven, stove, dryer, or dishwasher, which all dump additional heat and humidity directly into your living spaces.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and keep pets in the coolest, lowest level of the home.
