But if you notice your furnace kicking on, running for just two or three minutes, and abruptly shutting down before reaching your set temperature, your system is short cycling.
Short cycling isn’t just inefficient—it spikes your energy bills and places tremendous mechanical wear on the compressor, ignitor, and blower motor. Addressing the issue early in the season prevents a total heating failure during a mid-winter New England freeze.
Here are the primary culprits behind furnace short cycling and what steps you should take to resolve them.
The single most common cause of short cycling is restricted airflow through the return ducts.
When an air filter becomes clogged with dust, pet hair, or debris—or when a high-MERV filter is installed that exceeds the system’s static pressure design—the blower cannot pull enough air across the heat exchanger. Heat builds up rapidly inside the cabinet until the high-limit switch trips to prevent a fire, instantly shutting down the burners while the blower continues to run.
Modern gas furnaces rely on a small metal rod called a flame sensor to ensure gas is actively burning. If the sensor does not detect a flame within a few seconds of ignition, it signals the control board to shut off the gas valve to prevent unburned gas from accumulating inside the home.
Over time, burning gas creates a thin layer of carbon and oxidation across the sensor rod. Even if the burners light properly, the buildup insulates the rod, preventing it from detecting the microamp electrical signal. The furnace assumes the flame failed and shuts down after 3 to 10 seconds.
Your thermostat controls the system based strictly on the ambient temperature of the wall space it occupies. If it receives inaccurate readings, it can cycle the furnace off prematurely.

If bird nests, leaves, or snow drifts block the exterior exhaust terminations, pressure switches trip immediately. Similarly, if the condensate trap or drain line becomes clogged with algae or sediment, an integrated float switch will shut off the burner assembly to prevent water from backing up into the electrical components.
